From past experiences, post-Tsunami in Aceh, post-earthquake in Yogyakarta and others as well as international experiences, many lessons can be learned. Hence, the international seminar was organized to cater discussion on:
- Long-term planning for recovery and integrated rehabilitation and reconstruction
- Management & coordination of recovery activities (role of various actors as national/local governments, international donors and communities)
- Effectively implementing mitigation measures as building guidelines, etc.
- Attention paid to long-term socio-economic recovery
URDI International Seminar was carried out in cooperation with Department of Public Works, Provincial Government of DI Yogyakarta, Programma Bilaterale Samenwerking Indonesie (PBSI) and other sponsors.
The seminar aimed to define key problems and bottlenecks encountered in current recovery processes and lessons learned from past experiences in Aceh (tsunami) and Nias, Pangandaran (tsunami), Yogyakarta and Central Java province (earth quake), Jakarta (floods), Sidoarjo (mud flow) and other experiences in Indonesia as well as international experiences. The seminar also define and propose long term directions which may contribute to the effectiveness of future disaster recovery processes.
There were 185 participant registered to attend the seminar, coming from national government agencies, local governments, NGOs, universities, research institutes, professionals, and students, from Indonesia as well as other countries such as Japan, Australia, Thailand, United States, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and France. The number of participants exceeds the expected target of 100.
In conjunction with the seminar there was a site visit and a welcoming dinner on Sunday July 8, 2007. The seminar itself was held at Amarta Grand Ballroom, Melia Purosani Hotel on July 9-10, 2007 in Yogyakarta.
