Integrated Pro-Poor Water and Waste Water Management in Small Towns in Indonesia

The Integrated Water and Wastewater Management in Small Town project was a colaborative project for the water and sanitation sector led by Urban and Regional Development Institute (URDI) and The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), carried out in the beginning of 2009.

Serang District is among local government that involved in the project. Waspola project aims to improve water access for the poor to adequate and sustainable water supply and environment sanitation services. With the assistance of the project, the district has developed water and sanitation working group (called Pokja AMPL) and produced strategic planning of water and sanitation as a general guideline for local government and other agencies who want to improve water and sanitation in the district.

As a result, area of Demaryon get connected to piped water and Community-Based Refill-Water Business in Sukawana is established. In general, there is tangible improvement of sanitation facility in both area Demayon and Sukawana. There is a promising future to replicate similar approach in other municipality, however it has to considered the unique characteristic of each area that may lead to different response of the community.
